Description:
East Texas Builders Association presents the annual Home Product Show at Maude Cobb Complex, Longview, featuring products for remodeling or for building new homes. Friday, February 10, 2012 from 5pm - 8pm; Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 9am - 5pm; and Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 1pm-4:00pm. Tickets $5 per person and free admission for children under 12. -- Quilting Marathon
Description:
TYLER Our Saviour's Lutheran Church will be having its 2nd Annual Quilting Marathon. No expierence necessary. Come help tie knots or just watch. You may also stop by and look at all the pews in the church draped in quilts. The marathon starts at 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. This year 35 quilts will be donated to the Tyler Fire Dept; 13 to Refuge of Life, and Lutheran World Relief. There will also be a raffle for a quilt. tickets are $1. The marathon will be in memory of Liz Troxell and Carol Pattings. For more info call 903-561-1865. MARSHALL “Women of God – Branded for Christ” West Side Church of Christ, 3003 Hynson Springs Road, FM 449, Marshall. 8 a.m., continental breakfast, program at 9 a.m. to noon. A western style lunch will be provided. Helen Rose Curtis is speaker. Speaker for teens, age 13-19 will be Lesa Willis. The presenter for the girls’ group ages 10-12 year old will be Mona Bradley. [All day event] E Tx Spring Landscape & Gardening Conference
Description:
East Texas Spring Landscape and Garden Conference, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Tyler Rose Garden Center, 420 Rose Park Drive, Tyler, presented by Texas Agrilife Extension Service. There is no pre-registration; attendees must register at the conference site. Doors open early at 7:30 a.m. The fee for the conference is $35 and includes morning coffee with doughnuts and a chicken box lunch. Speaker will be Dr. David Reed, Professor of Horticulture at Texas A&M in College Station. Speaker Malcom Beck, the Father of Compost in Texas, will talk on adding the gardener’s black gold to garden beds to provide food for plants and help retain water. No dirt, no problem. Carmen Wagner, a bromeliad specialist from Canton, will educate and entertain with a presentation about her favorite “Air Plants” – Tillandsias. Anne Brown and Dee Bishop, both Smith County Master Gardeners, are Firewise Landscape Specialists, trained by the Texas Forest Service and AgriLife Extension. Wildfires can happen nearly anywhere and these ladies will relate steps that can be taken to help make a home less susceptible to them. The afternoon will conclude with a series of topics regarding drought. Keith Hansen, Smith County Horticulturist with AgriLife Extension Service, will be sharing ways to make every drop of irrigation water count and ways to conserve this precious, life-sustaining resource. Daniel Duncum with the Texas Forest Service will offer information to discern the difference before hiring a service to remove dead-looking trees. His presentation is simply entitled “Are My Trees Dead?” After the conference and during breaks, attendees can take advantage of a panel of speakers and Master Gardeners who will be on hand to answer questions on landscaping issues. Other educational events in February include the East Texas Turfgrass Conference at the AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Overton on Thursday, February 2. Topics included in this program include “Turfgrass Drought Recovery”, “Irrigation Efficiency in Times of Drought”, programs on disease, weed and insect management, and “IPM and its Role in Local School Districts”. Registration is $30 at the door and includes lunch. Considering starting a vineyard? Take advantage of the Prospective Wine-grape Grower Workshop at the Los Pinos Vineyards in Pittsburg on February 7. This workshop, conducted by AgriLife Viticulture Specialists, educates farmers, entrepreneurs or any other individual considering planting a commercial vineyard of what is generally involved in that sort of enterprise. The day-long program consists of a series of presentations providing an overview of the unique requirements and risks associated with establishing and operating a commercial vineyard in Texas. The workshop begins with registration at 8:30 a.m., followed by presentations and instruction from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Topics include vineyard economics, necessary viticulture expertise, vineyard site considerations, risk factors and vineyard labor requirements. To register, go to the Texas AgriLife Extension Conference Services website at http://agriliferegister.tamu.edu and enter the word “wine’ in the keyword field. Registration is $150 per individual or $250 per couple, and lunch is included. Finally, the East Texas Fruit & Vegetable Conference will be held Tuesday, February 28 at the Tyler Rose Garden Center.
