-- DR. JOHN CARLOS

Description: TYLER
Seen around the world, DR. JOHN CARLOS’ speechless statement on the 1968 Olympic podium sparked controversy and career fallout. Yet his show of defiance remains one of the most iconic images of Olympic history. His book, The John Carlos Story, tells the remarkable tale of this lifelong activist’s notorious salute. Carlos won the bronze-medal in the 200 meters race at the 1968 Olympics, where his Black Power salute on the podium with Tommie Smith took place. After his track career, Carlos played professional football for the NFL and CFL and became a founding member of the Olympic Project for Human Rights. In 2003, he was inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame and accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2008 Espy Awards for his salute. Dr. Carlos continues his life-long mission to improve human rights conditions by being actively involved with global and community movements.
